Using the Drum Tracks

Free Download   These tracks can be valuable when you're trying to learn to play something fast. They give you a way to gradually, systematically increase your speed, and develop a great sense of steady time. Download the drum tracks in MP3 form, convert them to WAV files using software like CDex. Then, you can burn them to audio CD. Click Here to Download the Drum Tracks.

The drum parts are quartz-accurate, and playing with them for just a few weeks can do amazing things for your sense of time.

4-counts and 6-counts   There are two sets of drum tracks at different tempos. The first set is based on a 4/4 rock beat. The second set is based on a 6/8 rock beat.

Working with drum tracks burns the sound of a steady tempo into your memory. Before long, you develop a real sensitivity to any small changes in tempo.

Experiment!   Using these tracks requires a little imagination. You have to make some creative decisions.

It's up to you to decide how fast you want to play something, and how you want to synchronize it with a drum beat. Between all of the tempos you have to choose from, you should be able to find a beat that is comfortable. With a little experimentation, you'll fall right in.

Tempos

Tempos are measured in beats per minute. It works on the same principle as 'miles per hour.' It's just a measurement of speed.

Each drum track has half notes played by the bass drum, and quarter notes played by the bass and snare combined, and eighth notes played by the closed hi-hat. You have six different tempos from 40 beats per minute to 140 beats per minute.

For example, If you want to practice a part at 80 bpm, you can play quarter notes at 80 bpm, or you can play eighth notes at 40 bpm. So it is possible to play a slow guitar part over a fast tempo. The reverse is also true - you can play a fast guitar part over a slow tempo.

Every musician has to develop a 'mental tape recorder.' You have to be able to 'hear' a melody and mentally slow it down so you can isolate any single note.

Be Creative - Have Fun
