Placing Your Left-Hand Fingers

Remember to place your fingers as close to the frets as possible, since this gives your fingers the best leverage. Some chords require you to place your fingers on adjacent strings at the same fret. These chords force some of your fingers away from the frets.

Try to pay attention to the finger-placement in the videos. Try to make your hand shapes look like the examples in the video.

Some chords are strummed using all six strings. Some omit the 6th (lowest) string, and a few omit other strings. With a little practice, you will learn to strum any combination of 3, 4 or 5 strings that you want.

The first seven chord shapes covered in this lesson all use either one or two fingers in the left hand. The remaining chords will all use three fingers, usually your index, middle and ring fingers.
