You have a choice of how to play notes with your right hand. I recommend that you try to use a guitar pick, but if that's too difficult, then you can also use your thumb.

If you choose to use your thumb with these exercises, you will develop a 'feel' that will make it easier for you to transition to a pick later. Thumb technique is important in many guitar styles.

Holding a Guitar Pick

Here is one way of holding a guitar pick. The ring and middle fingers are in an 'open' position, touching the strings.

Here is another way of holding a pick. Here, the right-hand fingers are in a 'closed' position.
