If you have a guitar tuner, and if you know how to use it, then go ahead and tune your guitar now. If you don't know how to tune, read 'Using Your Electronic Tuner' at the website. You can also tune by ear using the 'Standard Tuning Download,' also available at the website.
Holding The Guitar - Sitting
How you hold your guitar is important, especially in the beginning. Since there is no really comfortable way for you to hold the guitar, you should give yourself every possible advantage. As you get more used to playing, you can find what works best for you. Your best bet is to play while sitting.
You should use a chair with no arms.
You should be able to put both feet flat on the floor.
You may want to prop your right leg with a phone book.
You can also use a stool with a foot rest. You can also sit cross-legged on the floor, and you can sit on a pillow or cushion. This is probably not the preferred position, but it works for many people.
You probably don't want to use a sofa, recliner, or bean bag chair. It's almost impossible to play comfortably on any of these chairs.
Some teachers will tell you that playing guitar sitting down is only 'correct' way to play. This view is simply wrong, I wont even go into the reasons why. You will have to experiment to find what positions are the most comfortable for you.
