Playing Two Notes At The Same Time - When two number are written one above the other, it means to play them both at the same time. In the tab line below, play the 1st and 2nd string together.

Example 6 -
Use your index finger to cover both the 1st and 2nd string. This means placing the end of your finger flat against the neck, instead of playing on your fingertips.

Tablature does not usually tell you what finger to put on what note. After a while, you will learn to 'see' number combinations as shapes. This helps you to visualize the hand position you need to play the part.
This should give you a general idea of how tablature works. We will see examples of tab starting in Chapter 3. All of the single line movements in the lessons will include tablature.
Tab can be used to show string bends, slides and other techniques. We wont cover those, because we wont be using them in the lessons.
