Tablature - Each Number Means 'Play 1 Note'

Numbers written on the six lines are fret numbers. Each time you see a number on a line of tablature, it means to play the note on the string and at the fret indicated by the number.

Each number on a line of tablature means one of the following:

  • Pick stroke with the right hand (no change in the left hand)

  • Pick stroke with the right hand and change left hand position

  • Hammer with the left hand (no pick stroke)

  • Pull with the left hand (no pick stroke)

  • Slide with one finger of the left hand to a higher or lower note (no pick stroke)

(If the list above doesn't mean very much right now, don't worry. Read on.)

A '0' means to play an open string. '1' means to play a note at the first fret, '2' means to play a note at the second fret, and so on. These numbers are read left-to-right.

    Tablature Examples With Videos

Let's look at a few of the exercises we have already covered, and see how these parts are written in guitar tablature. Here is the first example:

Example 1   Play the Open Low E String 4 times. The Video Clip below is a close-up of the right hand. For most people, this is your 'picking hand.' Don't fret any notes with your left hand, just play the open Low E String with your right. Click on the 'Video' button to the right to see a video demonstration.

The guitar part in the video looks like this when it's written in tablature:
