This Is Tablature Tablature is a way of describing guitar parts on paper. Tablature is different from 5-line staff notation. Tab is designed especially for guitar. It is a fast and easy way to learn the note-order of your favorite guitar parts.
Here is what a line of tablature looks like:

There are six lines. Each line represents one string of the guitar. The string with the highest pitch is the 1st string. The string with the lowest pitch is the 6th string.
Notice that the line representing the 6th string is closest to the bottom of the page, and the 1st string is closest to the top of the page. This is the reverse of how you hold your guitar. When you hold your guitar, the highest string is nearest to the floor, and the lowest string is nearest to the ceiling.
Fret Numbers
Each Fret on the guitar is numbered, starting at the low end of the neck, and counting up. These fret numbers correspond to the numbers written on the six lines of tablature. |

Open strings are represented by an 'O.' You can think of this as 'O for 'Open.' Or you can think of the Nut at the end of the neck as the 'Zero Fret.' It means that you play the string without fretting. In other words, no left-hand fingers on that string.
