Reading Tablature

What Is Tablature?   Guitar tablature is a way of notating guitar parts. It is much easier to learn and to use than 5-line staff notation. Tablature shows you exactly where to put your fingers on the guitar neck, and it shows you the exact order of the notes in the part.

Most guitar players use tablature to show them what notes on the neck to play, and in what order. This is enough if you are familiar with the way the song or the guitar part sounds. You can figure out the rhythm if you know the order of the notes.

Tablature also includes notation for rhythm. If you know how to read it, the rhythmic notation tells you how long to hold each note. Most players don't know how to read the rhythmic notation, and it isn't necessary if you know how the song is supposed to sound. This lesson does not cover rhythmic notation.

You can use tablature to tell you the order of the notes, and the location of the note on the neck. It's important to know the location of each note. This is because on the guitar you can often play the same note in more than one place.

Guitar tablature is a great resource for players at all levels, even beginning players. There are many books, magazines and websites that offer tabs. To find tablature websites, just type 'guitar tab' into a search engine. If you're looking for tablature by a particular band, include the band name in your search.
