Keep Your Fingers Close To The Frets

You get your best leverage and tone with your fingers directly behind the frets. You don't have to use as much finger pressure with your fingers directly behind the frets. Notice how I place my fingers behind the frets in the videos. Keep this in mind until you get used to it.

Example 1   The first eight examples begin with an open string, followed by a fretted note on the same string. In this lesson, we are practicing three basic movements: (1) Place your left-hand finger on a fret (2) Pick the string with your right hand, and (3) Remove your finger from the string. The order of steps in the first eight examples is:

'Pick - Place - Pick - Remove.'

Notice that 'Place' and 'Pick' are almost simultaneous, so it's kind of hard to separate them. But 'Place' has to happen a split-second before 'Pick.'   'Remove' and 'Pick' are also almost simultaneous. 'Remove' has to happen a split-second before 'Pick.'

Start with the highest string. Alternate between the open 1st string and 1st string at the 3rd fret. Here is the tablature for the first of video.

1 -- Pick the open high string. ('Open' means no fingers on the frets.) Let this note ring for a moment.

2 -- Place your finger on the high string at the 3rd fret.

3 -- Pick the high string. Let the note ring for a moment.

4 -- Remove your finger from the string.

Play along with the video demonstration.
